Ballet Project 2014: Part 9 – Night: Shawangunk Grasslands
This is part 9 of the 2014 edition of the Ballet Project. This is a series I shot last summer and fall. These photos comprise ballet poses at beautiful unexpected locations around the Hudson Valley and Catskills region of New York State. Check back weekly for new posts on the Ballet Project.
After shooting at the grasslands at sunset (part 8), I decided that the scene was so beautiful I would try to come back at night. I had been wanting to shoot night portraits with stars for several years and finally found a location that might work perfectly.
So at around midnight we returned to the scene. It was pitch black when we arrived. No one was there as expected so we unloaded and setup. Slowly as our eyes adjusted I could make out the details of the grasslands and lights off on the horizon.
I shot several 30-second exposures which the stars just popped out of the image. I was amazed. Then we turned to use the lights in the distance as a background. With the stars and lights the scene was breathtaking. I was blown away.
As we finished up the moon rose over the horizon with ended our shoot because now too much light was beaming into the scene. It was quite a sight to watch the moon slowly rise over the horizon on the grasslands.
